OCN Level 6 Accredited

Sleep coach certification that stands up to scrutiny

Sleep consulting is not a regulated profession, so anyone can print a certificate. The Holistic Sleep Coaching Program is accredited at Level 6 through the Open College Network, the largest vocational awarding body in the UK, and led by Dr Lyndsey Hookway and Emma Dewey.

Fully online and self-paced. Most students finish in around four months while working full time.

What sleep coach certification actually means

A sleep coach certification is simply the qualification a training provider awards once you have completed their course and passed its assessment. That sounds straightforward, and it is where most people get caught out.

Because sleep consulting is not regulated, the word certification covers an enormous range. At one end sit weekend self-study certificates that anyone can pass. At the other sit accredited programmes where an external awarding body verifies the teaching and marks the standard of your work. Both produce a certificate. Only one of them tells a family, a health visitor or a referring professional anything meaningful about how you were trained.

So the useful question is not which certification should I get. It is what will this certification actually let me do, and who stands behind it.

Why the depth of your training matters more here than elsewhere

In a regulated profession, the qualification does the reassuring for you. In sleep coaching, you do it yourself. There is no single regulated qualification required to practise, which means your training is the thing that separates you from someone who completed a short online course last weekend.

It also shapes the work you can take on. Shallow training gives you a set of techniques to apply. Deeper training gives you the reasoning to work out why a particular child is not sleeping, which is what complex cases, neurodivergent children, feeding difficulties and mental health considerations all quietly require.

Six questions worth asking any provider

Ask these of us and of anyone else you are considering. The answers tell you more than any sales page.

  • Who accredits it, and at what level?Accredited by an external awarding body is not the same as approved by an association the provider belongs to. Ask for the body and the level, and check that the certificate is issued by that body.
  • How is your work actually assessed?Multiple choice alone tells you very little. Written assessment that is marked, moderated and externally verified is what makes a level meaningful.
  • Who teaches it, and what have they published?Look for named clinicians with a track record in the field, not an anonymous curriculum team.
  • Is there live supervision, or only recordings?Watching videos builds knowledge. Presenting a real case to an experienced clinician builds judgement.
  • What happens after you certify? Most people who stall do so after qualifying, not during. Ask what ongoing support, updates and community you keep.
  • Does it teach you to build the practice as well as do the work?Clinical skill alone does not produce clients. Ask whether pricing, positioning and client acquisition are taught properly or bolted on.

Certification route

How you earn the qualification

The certificate is issued through the Open College Network once your work has been marked and externally verified, not simply because you finished the modules.

  1. Apply and check the fit

Book a free 45-minute call and complete a short application form. The call covers your goals, how the programme works, the investment and whether this is genuinely right for you.

  2. Work through the sixteen modules

Fully self-paced, on any device. Each lesson ends with short multiple-choice questions and you need 80% to pass, with unlimited retakes so nobody gets stuck.

  3. Join live supervision as you learn

Twice-weekly clinical supervision with Dr Lyndsey Hookway and regular business sessions with Emma Dewey, inside a private practitioner community.

  4. Complete the written assessment

An essay-based assignment of roughly 250 to 300 words per question, drawn from the topics covered. You have 30 weeks to complete it, and we will tell you if anything needs amending and give you time to do it.

  5. Receive your OCN Level 6 certificate

Your work is marked by us and then verified by Open College Network. Once verified, your qualification is issued through OCN. Graduates can also join the public Holistic Sleep Coaches Directory.

Who certifies with us

Who this certification is for

The programme suits practitioners who already support families and want genuine depth, including health visitors, midwives, IBCLCs and aspiring IBCLCs, maternity nurses, doulas, occupational therapists, and nursery or childcare professionals. It also suits parents building a new career from scratch, and no previous sleep training is required.

What matters most is alignment. This is a responsive, evidence-based approach that gets results without falling back on non-responsive techniques. If you are looking for a fixed set of sleep-training methods to apply to every family, another course will suit you better.

If you are still weighing up the career itself rather than the certification, our full guide to becoming a baby sleep consultant in the UK walks through every step, and the free resources library lets you sample how we teach before you speak to anyone.

FAQ

Sleep coach certification questions

What is sleep coach certification?

It is the qualification a training provider awards once you have completed their course and passed its assessment. Because sleep consulting is not regulated, certifications vary enormously in depth, from short self-study certificates to accredited, degree-level programmes verified by an external awarding body.

Do you need a certification to work as a sleep coach?

There is currently no single regulated qualification required to practise, which is exactly why the depth of your training matters. Families, referrers and professional colleagues look at who trained you, how you were assessed and whether the training was externally verified.

What does OCN Level 6 accreditation mean?

The Open College Network is the largest vocational awarding body in the UK. Accreditation at Level 6 means teaching and assessment standards are upheld through a rigorous internal and external verification process, and Level 6 sits at degree level on the UK framework. Your certificate is issued through Open College Network, not only by us.

How long does certification take?

Sixteen modules across four progressive phases and over 100 hours of learning, fully self-paced. Most students complete the taught content in around four months while working full time, and you are given 30 weeks to complete the written assessment.

Do I need previous qualifications?

No previous sleep training is required. You will need a good level of conversational English, since the course is taught and assessed in English, and a computer to study on. Beyond that, what matters is a genuine commitment to responsive, evidence-based practice.

How much does it cost?

We do not publish the price. We discuss it on the free 45-minute call, alongside whether the programme is genuinely right for you and what the return on it looks like in practice. Payment plans run from two to eighteen months, and we fund at least two full scholarship places each year. Our full FAQ page covers scholarships and payment in detail.

Is the programme accredited for CERPs?

Yes. For IBCLC and aspiring IBCLC colleagues the course carries CERPs. The exact allocation is reconfirmed at each re-accreditation, so ask us for the current figure on your call.

What happens after I certify?

Your access does not end. You keep lifetime access to the course materials, stay in the graduate community, and continue to receive masterclasses covering clinical updates and business development, plus mentorship to support your confidence, referrals and practice growth.
